Leaving Home

Clear water rippled against the violet scales of a beautiful tail, as it floated along the steady current. The body connected to the tail spread out against the ocean’s surface, it’s breath vaporizing in the cold artic air. A splash erupted a few feet away, and the girl glanced over at her friend.

“What are you doing, Zaley?”

Her voice was sweet and melodic, drifting along the breeze. Azalea sighed, blowing bubbles in aggravation. She slid her head under the water, surfacing only seconds after, not far from the girl next to her.

“Waiting for you to come back to the village with me. Why are we up here again? Come on, Cerulean, don’t you remember its hunting season around here?”

Cerulean furrowed her eyebrows, tilting her head back so that her ocean blue hair spread out through the water. Of course she knew that the humans began their hunt around this time of year, but she had preoccupied her mind with too many things to care. With an exasperated sigh, vapor floated from her mouth and she grinned.

“I don’t think I’m going home today. I’m gonna go to the south, to the Americas.”

These words caused Azalea to choke on the salty ocean water.

“What?!”

They had been friends, since forever. Being born on the same day and the only maiden’s older than 20 years in their village; they spent a lot of their time together. Azalea, however, had no idea that her best friend wanted to visit the world of humans. She gave a swift flip of her tail, speeding to Cerulean’s side.

“Are you serious?! You aren’t planning on getting… Out… Of the water are you?”

Cerulean just smiled. She knew that if she were to place her body onto dry sand, she would transform into a human, and lose her mermaid form and personality. She would become a totally different being. Her memories would remain, but she would never be the same girl.

“You bet I am.”

Azalea grabbed her friend’s wrist, nearly cracking the shell band around it.

“You can’t!”

Fear and anger swam within Azalea’s magenta eyes; Cerulean had only seen this look once. Her heart jumped but she shrugged out of her grasp.

“Listen, Zaley… I'm suffocating. I need to explore my limits and see what I can do!”

Azalea’s eyes bore into her own.

“What about Ramie… and the other children?”

Cerulean’s body froze for a split second, Ramie’s sad eyes flashing into her thoughts. She closed her eyes, shaking off the sounds of the child’s cries for her.

“Ramie isn’t a baby… She can survive without me.”

“SHE LOVES YOU CERULEAN!”

Her eyes remained closed as Azalea’s own filled with tears of hatred. She had never heard Cerulean speak like this before. She knew she loved the children and Ramie was like a younger sister to her. Azalea shook her head in shame.

“How can you be so cruel…? How… How will you survive out there?”

Cerulean allowed her eyes to open, and shifted her vision so that she was staring at her scarlet haired friend.

“Cruel? Cruelty is being forced to stay in the SAME village for over 20 years, with no freedom. I’ll find away to survive… Human’s have a biological system almost identical to ours… I’ll be fine. Tell Mother I don’t know when I’ll be back.”

With a quick grin, Cerulean dove under the surface, ignoring the yells of Azalea. She was off to find freedom and start a new life, as a human…
